I think it's a requirement of being a father to come up with bad puns.

That exchange was followed up by Mum saying "You're lucky Thomas isn't here, you'd have got thumped for coming up with a 'Mummy joke'." It is usually her who comes up with the bad puns, but I think Dad just stores up his potential for less frequent absolutely awful ones half the time.
